Creative Bursts

Sometimes I have a burst of creative energy, and it’s usually for a specific outlet like making music, writing a story, coding, drawing, etc. I’ve noticed that the activity I engage in to release that energy determines the satisfaction I have when I walk away. When it’s coding related, I am generally satisfied with the result. When it’s music related, I can kind of cobble it together, but lose steam part of the way through and quit. And when it comes to writing or drawing, I can barely start before feeling put off.

It seems to me that learning in the field of a creative endeavor is important to translating one’s creativity into art, and that the success with which I do this translation is linked to my satisfaction with the process.

It’s like creative energy is an explosion. Unshaped, it quickly expands in all directions and gets nowhere. With time and effort, learning is like building a rocket nozzle around that explosion, to shape and guide it. You can get much further with the same amount of energy!
